“From 2,000 murders per year to less than 600”

In the 1990s, the New York Police Department wrote an impressive success story. It had been able to lower the murder rate in its city from 2,000 to less than 600 and reduced the crime rate by 70%. This did not only turn one of the most dangerous cities in the US into the safest big city in the US, but also made the New York Police Department one of the best and most efficient police organizations in the world.

How was this exceptional success possible and what was it based on? The newly elected Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani and his Chief of Police Bill Bratton introduced a new management system that is considered the most successful management method for the public realm in the US.
